Construction sites bring together a unique mix of height, heavy machinery, moving vehicles, and constantly changing conditions — which is why the same small set of hazard categories shows up again and again across the industry, regardless of country or project type. Recognising these five early, and controlling them properly, accounts for most of the difference between a site with a strong safety record and one without.
Falls from height
Falls remain one of the most consistent causes of serious injury on construction sites — from scaffolding, roofs, ladders, and unprotected edges. The risk isn't limited to obviously high locations either; falls from just a few metres can still cause serious harm.
- Apply the hierarchy of controls: eliminate work at height where possible, then use guardrails and edge protection before relying on personal fall-arrest systems
- Inspect scaffolding and ladders before each use, not just at installation
- Keep leading edges and floor openings clearly marked and protected
Struck-by incidents
Being struck by moving vehicles, falling tools, swinging loads, or debris is a leading cause of injury on active sites, particularly where pedestrian workers share space with plant and machinery.
- Separate pedestrian routes from vehicle and plant movement wherever the site layout allows
- Establish exclusion zones under crane lifts and overhead work
- Require high-visibility clothing and enforce reversing-vehicle protocols (spotters, alarms, cameras)
Electrical hazards
Contact with live wiring, damaged cables, or overhead power lines can cause severe injury even at relatively low voltages, and construction environments — often wet, dusty, and full of temporary wiring — increase that risk considerably.
- Identify and mark the location of underground and overhead services before work begins
- Use residual current devices (RCDs) on all temporary power supplies
- Keep a safe working distance from overhead lines and treat all cables as live until confirmed otherwise
Caught-in or caught-between hazards
This covers trench collapses, being pulled into unguarded machinery, and being crushed between a moving object and a fixed structure — incidents that tend to happen quickly and with limited warning.
- Use proper shoring, sloping, or trench boxes for any excavation deeper than about 1.2 metres
- Keep machine guards in place and never bypass interlocks for convenience
- Maintain clear separation between workers and mobile plant during operation
Manual handling injuries
Less dramatic than a fall or a struck-by incident, but far more common day-to-day: sprains, strains, and long-term musculoskeletal injury from repeated lifting, carrying, and awkward postures.
- Use mechanical aids — trolleys, hoists, forklifts — wherever a load can reasonably be moved without manual lifting
- Train workers in correct lifting technique and encourage team lifts for heavier or awkward loads
- Rotate tasks to limit repetitive strain on any one worker over a shift
The common thread
None of these five hazards are unique to any one project or country — they're structural to construction work itself. What separates a site that manages them well from one that doesn't usually isn't luck; it's a genuine, applied risk assessment process, done properly and revisited as conditions change, rather than a checklist completed once and filed away.
